When such routers are installed, a default password is set which depends on the company or manufacturer. Very often, this password is not changed and provides an easy loophole for potential attacks by hackers. This default password is easy to obtain as the admin password for most of the commercially available routers is made available on the internet for installation purposes. This may not be the case with all manufacturers but it is worth looking into, to make sure that your password is unique. Once the router has been installed, it is very important that you change the password immediately. This can be done easily with a few simple steps. It also advisable to change the password once in a few months to make sure your security is intact. Now let us look at what steps need to be done to change the password.

If you remember your previous username and password, follow the instructions under Category 1 to change the password. If you do not remember the username and password, follow the instructions under Category 2.

Follow These Steps to Change Router Password

Category 1:

Step 1: Connect your router to your computer.

Now, this can be done differently for different routers, as some routers allow configuration changes wirelessly, while some routers don’t. To be on the safer side, connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable.

Step 2: Open your browser and enter the IP address of the router’s administration interface

You can use any browser for this. If you don’t know the IP address necessary, you can find it in the manual provided while purchasing the router. For most of the commercially available routers, you can find the IP address by entering the model details on Google.

If you are still unable to find the IP address, open windows command prompt( windows key +R). type cmd and press enter. Now, in the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter. You will find the ‘default gateway address’. This is your IP address.

If you are using a Mac, go to System Preferences and click on network. Here click on the active internet connection and you get to see your router’s IP address.

After entering the IP address the configuration page will ask you to enter a username and password for validation.

Step 3: Change the password.

Enter your admin username and password and you will be able to see the configurations page. Click on admin and you will be given the option to change the password. Enter a strong password and be sure to remember it, as you will need a factory reset if you forget it.

Category 2:

This case requires a factory reset of your router and hence all data previously stored in your router will be erased and overwritten by default factory settings.

Step 1: Press and hold the reset button on your device for a few seconds.

You may need to do so for 20 to 30 seconds as the short press is used to reset the router without reverting to factory settings. You may find the button on the back of your router. In some cases, you may need a pin or a paperclip for the same.

Step 2:  Follow step 2 from Category 1.

Step 3: Enter the Default Admin name and Default password.

This is usually available online for specific models. Click on admin and you will be given the option to change the password to your own unique one.
