On trusting the government in the transition to the market
Opinion polls show that the government is distrusted, on the one hand, by those who see a departure from the "ideals of socialism" in market orientation, and on the other, by those who doubt the government's ability to effectively implement its self-declared course. Indeed, there are as many supporters of a radical way to make the transition to the market among those who do not trust the government as there are opponents of the market as such, 25% each.
The situation is also extremely complicated by the fact that among those who unconditionally support the government, 2/3 are "anti—marketeers" and people who have not determined their attitude to reform, and in the intermediate group — mostly those who trust the government - "marketeers" only marginally (by two percentage points) outnumber those who have not yet formed their opinion about the market, and his obvious opponents.
The distrust generated by doubts about the correctness of the course chosen by the government is compounded by disbelief in its ability to lead the country out of the crisis in principle, as well as concerns about its actions on social protection of the population in a situation when the transition to the market will be carried out in practice.
Suffice it to say that to the question: "Will the government protect the interests of ordinary people during the transition to the market, and do everything possible to ensure that many people do not lose their jobs and livelihoods?" only 26% of respondents answered in the affirmative, 54% in the negative, and 20% found it difficult to answer.
At the same time, almost every second (47%) of the respondents doubts the current government's ability to lead the country out of the crisis, while only 1/3 of the respondents trust the government in this regard.
At the same time, only 17% of respondents believe that the failure of the market transition program will not have any serious consequences for the government. According to the majority of the population, if the transition to the market does not produce tangible positive results in a relatively short period of time, an acute political crisis is very likely to occur. Moreover, only 18% of respondents expressed the opinion that the transfer of power to other political forces in this case will take place through peaceful parliamentary means, 29% do not rule out the possibility of removing the government as a result of mass popular demonstrations, and 13% consider a "coup at the top" to be the most likely.
Summing up the above, it is necessary to note the following.
The attitude of the population towards the prospect of an accelerated transition to the market is contradictory. While supporting in principle the very idea of transition to the market, a significant part of the population expresses serious concerns about the possibility of such a transition without major social losses, breaking stereotypes, which people are not psychologically prepared for.
