To send a message to the descendants

In one of the documentaries shown at the festival, an elderly resident of Lapland says something like this: "...The song is like a message... I don't know why, but I have to pass it on to the next generations."

Maybe we lost this important feeling for a while, being euphoric from the successes of science and technology? It was only relatively recently that we began to realize that wise folklore mechanisms somehow connected us very subtly, imperceptibly with nature, with the past and the future, and helped us to live. Here, for example, is what a modern composer writes about the disappearance of folk songs from our everyday life: "Does it affect the mental balance of an adult if they did not sing lullabies in infancy? After all, in his childhood he was deprived of the great share of affection and tenderness that is contained in them."

Experts say that the destruction of folklore consciousness of the people can be compared with the death of nature. It is only now that we are beginning to discover this fascinating and voluminous book — folklore consciousness and psychology, which provided the peasant with the ability to live without destroying his family, which is not typical of us today. Some scientists even believe that, having completely lost this quality, we will lose both the ecological battle and the battle to finally feed ourselves, because the empty heart of the new peasant will not love the land, and without love the land will not give birth. Yes, actually, don't we already see this type of farmer, indifferently looking at the meager results of his modest labors, the erosion of the earth, and its pollution? So, perhaps, the very folklore in which many see only the aesthetic side of folk life or a page of the past, part of an obsolete culture, is vital to us today, and tomorrow, of course, too.

How can folklore be preserved, developed, and enriched? In my opinion, this is fully possible on one condition: if he returns to where he came from, to his family, to a rural house, or to a city dweller's house. Is it possible?

The folklore ensemble Rusava from the Ukrainian village of Stena participated in the Moscow Festival. The band is always admired by both the audience and experts for its organic and elegant manner of presenting folklore on stage. The organizer and permanent head of Rusava is Zoya Zosimovna Chernaya, a former rural teacher. She also brought her two daughters to the ensemble: Olya, who, following her mother's example, chose the teaching profession, and Katya, who now works as a pioneer leader and, obviously, will also remain in line with the family tradition.

What has the ensemble done in the two decades of its existence? In addition to hundreds of concerts, which gave numerous viewers the joy of experiencing authentic folk music, amateur artists also worked as researchers. They collected dozens of ancient songs, restored and show peasant rituals on stage, found and preserved various details of the traditional Ukrainian costume. All this is done by the elderly participants of Rusava, and the young ones, there are even schoolgirls. This small beacon is lit, indicating the right path to the revival and preservation of the original culture of the people. And it is no coincidence that it was lit by a village teacher, who, perhaps, sees a little better than others what the spiritual impoverishment of the village leads to.

But, unfortunately, there are not so many such folk educators today. And they alone cannot revive folklore. Millions of people have been displaced from their native lands, thousands of villages and villages have been abandoned, and the consolidation of already immensely overgrown cities is one of the most complex phenomena of our time, causing many social, economic, and political problems.

And all these issues are directly related to the issues of the existence and revival of folklore. Perhaps some people found the answers to them after attending the concerts of the festival, while others were made to think...
